Alternative Meat Proteins

Cellular technology is an innovative solution that offers many possible answers to sustainability, health and welfare concerns. While consumers are beginning to express interest and openness to this area of innovation, there is a pressing need for widespread education to promote genuine public understanding and support.

The 2022 Innova Meat, Dairy, and Alternative Protein Survey explored consumer attitudes towards cell-based meat and mycelium-based meat. The results revealed that only 13% of respondents in France, Germany, Spain, and the UK were familiar or very familiar with these terms. Meanwhile, food and beverage launches featuring cultured or microbial-based protein ingredients have shown moderate growth with a CAGR of +6% (2018-2022). Nevertheless, there is a growing interest in the field at the national policy level. For instance, the Dutch government has invested a record €60M to boost cellular meat and agriculture, making it the largest single example of public funding globally to date. This commitment to making the sector work is creating opportunities for significant growth.
